Adult Band Club (ABC)

Program Overview

Adult Band Club (ABC) is a chance for gender-marginalized adults ages 18+ to connect, have fun, create something with a brand new band, and build community! The program places you in a band with 2-4 other musicians of varying experience levels and gives you the opportunity to gather and practice as a band on a set schedule over a period of six weeks. The band practice schedule, location, and gear will be provided. Bands will write at least one original song and play a set at the Showcase of up to 10 minutes.

For some, ABC is the next step after participating in Adult Rock Camp to try out a short-term and slightly more formal band setting. For others, it’s a way to shake things up with a new band. For everyone, it’s a way to participate in the Rain City Rock Camp community through playing music together.

Some music experience is necessary, but just enough that you feel confident contributing to a band. Neither instrument instruction nor band coaching is provided as part of ABC.

Costs and Payment Information

Rain City Rock Camp strives to provide equitable access to programming, regardless of financial resources, so we use a pay-what-you-can model. Participants’ payments go towards covering the staff time that makes ABC possible. No one will be turned away for lack of funds.

When you apply, you’ll be asked to pledge what you can pay on your application. If you’re accepted, we’ll contact you to confirm your pledge and will send a payment form at that time. Please contact programsupport@raincityrockcamp.org with questions regarding tuition.

What Happens After I Apply for ABC?

You’ll hear back from us within 2 weeks of submitting your application. If you don’t initially get a spot in Adult Band Club, don’t worry. You’ll be immediately put on the waiting list and will hear from us if any spots become available. We’ll do our best to get you in!

Participants will meet their bandmates at the ABC Launch Meeting on Tuesday, December 16th at 6 pm. Bands will practice every Tuesday evening, from 6-8 pm, from January 6th through February 10th. Bands will perform on Monday evening, February 16th, in a combined Showcase with the Adult Rock Camp participants from that weekend. ABC participants are expected to attend all meetings, practices, and the Showcase.

Wearing a well-fitting mask is required at all times indoors at our programs and showcases, except when eating/drinking or performing on stage. We provide high-quality masks to those who cannot access them. Exceptions to our masking policy due to medical or sensory reasons can be made on a case-by-case basis. Please communicate with staff about exceptions before the start of camp.

We take COVID safety seriously because we believe we keep each other safe, and this is an easy way to make our programs more accessible to more people, especially immunocompromised folks. Our policy also decreases the likelihood of campers having to drop out of camp mid-session due to the spread of illnesses, so bands can stay as complete as possible! We don’t want any bands missing members on stage.

All instruments and equipment necessary will be provided at the rehearsal location and the Showcase. Participants are welcome to bring personal instruments to use if desired, and will be responsible for keeping them safe. Personal instruments and gear may not be stored at the rehearsal space.

Participants can choose to play electric guitar, bass, drums, keyboard and/or vocals in their band. Please indicate your instrument preferences in your application. Participants should be proficient on their chosen instrument.

Typically, yes. Participants are not assigned an instrument, but will be placed in bands based on the instrument(s) they are proficient in according to their application. With their bandmates, participants will work out who will play which instrument.

– Create and adhere to band norms (rules and expectations for how to collaborate and treat each other as a band)
– Write and perform at least one original song
– Play a set up to 10 minutes long (additional originals or covers beyond the first original song are encouraged)
– Use backline (drum kit and amps) provided for the performance

Cancellations will be honored fully for any reason. We ask that you deeply consider your availability and capacity when applying to ABC and accepting your spot. For planning purposes, cancellations made within two weeks of the Launch Meeting will have a $50 fee deducted from their refund.
