Answers to Your Questions About Virtual Summer Camp

Will there still be a South Sound Rocks! this year?
Since geographic location doesn’t matter in a virtual setting, we’ll be combining South Sound Rocks! and our Seattle Summer Camp into one big Virtual Summer Camp serving campers from the Tacoma and Seattle areas.

What will the schedule be like for Virtual Summer Camp?
Camp will go from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day with breaks between every session. Each day there will be a maximum of three to four hours of online time, and each session will be a maximum of one hour long. Campers will have flexible access to recordings for some workshops and will participate in at least one craft activity per day. And, we’ll all come together for assemblies via live meet-up!

Will there still be live performances at Virtual Summer Camp?
Local musicians will perform followed by a live Q&A session where campers can ask the artist questions.

How many campers will be at Virtual Summer Camp?
We expect to have two bands per age group, so there will be plenty of campers of similar ages to support each other.

What online platforms will be used for Virtual Summer Camp?
We’re working hard to determine the best choice of platform for Virtual Summer Camp. Our priorities are to ensure free accessibility, safety and security, and ease of learning.

Will instruments be provided for Virtual Summer Camp?
We’re exploring all options for campers to be able to make music, including online simulation tools and music apps. Currently, due to health and safety guidelines, we will not be lending RCRC instruments to campers. If this changes, we’ll notify all participants. Either way, access to an instrument will not be necessary for Virtual Summer Camp, but we will provide advanced programming for campers who have an instrument at home.

Will there be a Virtual Summer Camp showcase?
Yes! But it will look a little different! We’re working on creative ways for campers to perform virtually together at the end of Virtual Summer Camp to show off their new skills!

Will there still be workshops at Virtual Summer Camp?
Definitely! Lots of your favorite workshops will exist online including sessions on body power, songwriting, and our annual camp theme.

Answers for Youth

Is South Sound Rocks! only about music?
Music is the vehicle, but our goal is to empower our participants to engage their creative potential, champion equity, develop confidence and self-esteem, and thrive in our community of allies, activists, peers and mentors. We consider our programs equally successful if our participants speak up for the things they believe in as if they go on to release albums.

What Is the Express Yourself Piece (EYP)?
The EYP component of the South Sound Rocks! application is a way for us to get to know you better! We want you to create something that exemplifies who you are and what the theme of the year means to you. The EYP can be in any format you choose—painting, song, video, collage, you name it! The more creative, the better! We do ask that you submit your EYP in either PDF, MP4, MP3 or WAV format. Please email your EYP to [email protected] within two weeks of application.

Will I get to play the instrument I choose on my application?
In order to accommodate as many campers as possible, we sometimes assign applicants to instruments other than the one requested on their application. We appreciate your flexibility, and remember—all instruments are awesome!

What if I change my mind about the instrument I want to play after I apply?
You can choose to study guitar, bass, drums or vocals. Please indicate your first, second, third and fourth choices of instrument on the application. Although we do our best to accommodate everyone’s preferences, some campers will not get their first choice of instrument. Due to the need to acquire gear in advance, you cannot change your selection after you send in your application, and you cannot change instruments during camp.

Answer for Parents and Caregivers

How do I pay for South Sound Rocks!?
When you apply, you’ll be asked to pledge what you can pay. If you’re accepted, we’ll contact you within two weeks to confirm tuition and will request payment at that time. Please contact [email protected] for information regarding payment plans or questions regarding tuition.

Does South Sound Rocks! run for half days or full days?
South Sound Rocks! takes place from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. The culminating Showcase is on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. All campers must be present during the entire camp; please avoid scheduling appointments or other commitments during these times.

All the spots are full for South Sound Rocks! this year. Should I still try to sign up?
Yes! Send us your application, and we’ll put you directly on the waitlist. There are often cancellations or changes, and we always end up moving campers from the waitlist to enrollment in our programs. We’ll contact you to let you know that you’re on the waitlist and then contact you again if there are openings in the program you applied for.

We don’t live in South Puget Sound. Is my child eligible to apply?
Yes! We always have a few campers who aren’t from Washington. We don’t provide lodging or accommodations, and we are unable to give campers other participants’ personal information. We do, however, encourage campers and families to network with their peers through our parent/caregiver Facebook group, which is available once your application has been accepted. If you’re coming from out of town and would like more information about the Seattle area, please contact us at [email protected]

We have a guitar at home that our camper could use at South Sound Rocks! Do they need to bring it along to camp?
Instruments will be provided for use at camp during the camp week. If you or your camper have your own instrument, please feel free to bring it, knowing that your camper will be responsible for keeping it safe. Please note that Rain City Rock Camp does not accept liability for personal instruments.

Do you provide lunch or other meals for campers during the day?
Rain City Rock Camp provides a light breakfast, lunch and snacks for South Sound Rocks! campers. Please make us aware of any food allergies or intolerances on your application.

What is your cancellation policy?
Campers who cancel more than 30 days prior to the first day of camp programming will be issued a tuition refund, minus a $50 deposit fee. If you cancel 30 days or fewer from the first day of camp, you forfeit tuition and will not be issued a refund. For more details, consult our full cancellation policy.
